Signs of an Underground Oil Tank on a NH Property
You can do most of this yourself in twenty minutes with no equipment, and it is worth doing before you pay anyone to scan anything.
The reason it is worth doing here at all: 30.1% of Manchester housing was built in 1939 or earlier and 46.1% before 1960, when putting the tank in the yard was ordinary. Many of those houses converted decades ago and the tank stayed.
Pipes That Go Nowhere
This is the strongest sign and the easiest to spot. Walk the outside of the house and look at the foundation for a fill pipe or a vent pipe, usually a capped metal stub standing a foot or two out of the ground, or coming through the wall and stopping.
A vent has a small hood or a whistle fitting on top. A fill has a round cap, often four inches across, sometimes painted over so many times it reads as a decoration.
If the house runs on gas or electric and these are still there, something used to be attached to them.

Evidence Inside the Basement
Copper or black iron line coming through the foundation wall and terminating in nothing. Two lines side by side is a supply and return pair and is a strong indicator.
An oil burner or an old oil-fired boiler still sitting in a house heated another way. A patch in the wall where a line used to pass through. A disused chimney flue that nothing connects to any more.
Also worth noticing: an obviously newer heating system in an obviously older house tells you a conversion happened, and conversions are exactly when tanks got left in the ground.
What the Ground Tells You
A patch of lawn that dries out faster in summer, or grows differently from what is around it. Slight settling in a rectangle. A section of driveway or patio that was clearly poured at a different time from the rest.
Be careful with this one. Ground evidence is suggestive rather than conclusive, and old septic work, a filled cellar hole or a buried stump can produce the same pattern. Take it as a reason to look harder, not as an answer.
The Paperwork Route
Old plot plans, the deed history, previous listing photos and town records. Sellers' disclosures. Anything mentioning oil heat in a house that has not had it in your lifetime.
Get the county right before searching. Hooksett and Dunbarton are Merrimack County. Auburn and Candia are Rockingham. All four border Manchester and all four are routinely assumed to be Hillsborough, and a search in the wrong registry returns a clean result that means nothing.
None of This Is Proof Either Way
Absence of every sign above does not mean there is no tank. Tanks get paved over, built over and thoroughly forgotten, and the pipes get cut off flush and buried with them.
If the indicators are there, or the house is old enough and the stakes are a purchase, that is the point at which a sweep earns its cost. What happens if one turns up is covered on underground removal.
